In practice

Field services

Signal is not a design assumption

The situation

An HVAC contractor's engineers work in plant rooms, basements, and rooftop units - places with no signal, in gloves, one-handed, holding a torch. Job cards are paper. Photographs of the completed work go to personal phones and reach the office by text, or do not. Invoicing waits for the paperwork to come back with the van, which means Friday's jobs are billed the following week.

How it is approached

The app is built offline-first, because the basement is the normal case and not the edge case: the job card, the asset history, and the parts list are on the device before the engineer arrives, and sync happens when signal returns. The interface is designed for the actual posture of the work - large targets, one-handed reach, camera two taps from anywhere, no free-text field where a picker will do. A single codebase covers the mixed iOS and Android fleet, and distribution goes through managed deployment rather than asking engineers to find it in a store.

What changes

The job closes on site with photographs attached, and the invoice raises the same day - because the constraint was never the paperwork, it was that the paperwork travelled by van.
